Dance in Chaos
Publishing Final Piece
Project Aim
This project was designed to investigate how chaos and order coexist within visual art and design. Inspired by patterns found in nature and human behaviour, the work examines how repetition and structure can be interrupted intentionally to create visual tension, without breaking cohesion.
The objective was to create a sculptural book form that physically embodies these dualities. Through folding techniques, precision linework, and colour variation, the piece invites viewers to engage with symmetry and interruption simultaneously. It presents order not as perfection, but as a framework where chaos can be intentionally housed.
Project approach
The process relied heavily on physical experimentation—drawing by hand with fine liners and layering geometric patterns through gradual development. Each spread became a site of contrast, with some pages embracing total regularity and others allowing distortion to emerge. The book’s foldable format added an architectural element to the exploration.
Project result
The final outcome is a sculptural concertina book composed of intricate line-based artworks that shift from controlled geometry to layered visual dissonance. The folding structure and hand-drawn techniques enhance the tactile, slow experience of viewing. The result captures the essence of chaos and order as two forces constantly negotiating space.
Project learning / reflection / skills
This project developed key skills in physical making, pattern development, and conceptual thinking. It taught patience and discipline while also allowing moments of creative unpredictability. It also highlighted the importance of structure as a tool, not a limitation.
